Chums Partnership

S tudents at The Key School make global connections in part as members of the Chums Partnership, a collaboration between students and teachers in three schools on three continents. Since 2005, a partnership between Key School, Chumbageni Primary School in Tanzania, and Somers Park Primary School in England has served to deepen international friendships and broaden understandings of diverse communities around the world.

Key joined the Chums partnership when communication was established between Key and Somers Park through a British website called Global Gateway, a site that partners schools around the world. Somers Park was looking for an American school to join their existing partnership with Chumbageni. Key saw this triangular global link across three continents as a wonderful opportunity for the School’s students to broaden their understanding of the world community, and eagerly committed to the partnership. The three schools chose the name Chums to honor the students at Chumbageni and to reference the students’ international friendships. In 2006, the Chums partnership was the recipient of a 20/20 challenge grant from the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), which has helped fund collaborative Chums projects.

The three core objectives of the partnership are to foster global citizenship, emphasize interdependence among citizens and places around the world, and to share experiences and ideas through engagement in environmental sustainability projects in each school's community.

  • Kindergarteners Jog for Chumbageni

Since 2005, Key School has partnered with Chumbageni School in Tanga, Tanzania and Somers Park School in Malvern, England to connect students across three continents, providing multiple lenses through which to see, and better understand, themselves and the world. One aspect of this partnership, called Chums, has been service learning. Over the past few years students in the Pre, Lower, Middle and Upper Schools have participated in projects to help fund the building of a much needed new classroom for Chumbageni’s Kindergarten students. Click to see a gallery of the building process. Mr. Halifa Bilali, Head Teacher at Chumbageni, has told us that the new Kindergarten classroom is now in need of a table, desks, book shelves, and general school supplies. Our Kindergartners would like to help the Kindergartners at Chumbageni by participating in a fund raising project. Every few days, Key's Kindergarten classes will be taking a jog around the Manse field (about ¼ mile). To raise funds for Chumbageni, they are asking their families to pledge ten cents for each mile the Kindergarten team jogs.
