Writing Center

student learning in writing center

Dedicated to the teaching of writing across all departments and curricula, serving as a place where students and faculty alike may visit and discuss all aspects of reading and writing, the Writing Center fosters excellence in writing as a tool to sharpen and define a student’s thinking. It has always been a hallmark of a Key education, and the Writing Center is a concrete manifestation of this commitment.

As students strive to put forth their best work, the Upper School Writing Center provides support in a host of areas such as reading facility; note-taking strategies; decoding essay questions; brainstorming; outlining theses and assertions; using evidence; citing sources; proofreading for grammar and style; and understanding and integrating teacher feedback. In addition, workshops focus on elements of writing across the spectrum of classes comprising math, science, humanities, and performing arts.

The Writing Center is staffed by members of Key School’s faculty and by a select number of Key’s twelfth grade students, who, after a rigorous application process, have been designated as Peer Writing Tutors. Through their core knowledge of the Upper School curriculum and with guidance from Key faculty, these students support their peers with the processes they have found successful for their own writing.
