Key's 2020 Vision

Inspired by our Founders...

Founded by tutors from St. John’s College, Key School opened its doors over fifty years ago with two teachers, including the Headmaster, and eighteen students. Respecting the minds of children and recognizing their natural desire to know, to ask questions, and to seek answers, Key’s founders created a School that coupled experiential and innovative learning with a rigorous academic program—a radical idea in 1958. The primary goal of the School was to “foster the intellectual development of the individual.” Since its inception, Key School has differentiated itself not only in terms of its academics, but also in terms of its belief in the individual and its emphasis on respect for human differences. The School continues to look to the past with great admiration and appreciation for the wisdom and vision of its founders who were clearly in the vanguard. In fact, today, many schools across the country are working to harness a similar educational design that incorporates both the experiential and interdisciplinary approach that Key School has practiced for over fifty years.

Inspired by Our Growth…

In its more than fifty years, The Key School has seen dramatic change. Now the oldest PreK-12 nonsectarian independent school in Anne Arundel County, Key enrolls over 650 students and has a faculty and staff roster of 150. Key’s fifteen-acre campus now boasts fifteen buildings, with renovations and new construction that meld a home-like environment with contemporary technology. The School’s operating budget of nearly $15 million and its Annual Fund of over $500,000, in addition to its Endowment of over $10 million, further represent the School’s growth. As our founders envisioned, the program has also evolved over the years, yet the basic tenets of experiential discovery, serious academic rigor, and delight in learning have remained constant.

Inspired by Our Faculty…

Key’s greatest asset is its faculty. Noted for their experience, their intellectual vitality, and their concern for students, Key teachers are clearly among the brightest and most creative in their field. With teaching as an extension of their own commitment to learning and their passion for their craft, Key faculty bring the program to life, creating experiences that stimulate, challenge and develop in Key students a sustaining degree of intellectual curiosity.

Inspired by Our Future…

It is with inspiration and conviction that we build upon the strong foundation of our past. Inspired to ensure Key’s legacy for generations to come, The Board of Trustees recently adopted fundraising objectives for the School to Key's 2020 Vision which supports Key's current and future students, faculty, and staff.
