Key School Swimming: A New Program with a Bright Future
When the decision was made last year to add a varsity swimming program in 2016-2017, the positive reaction was overwhelming. Over the years, Key has had numerous successful club swimmers but the challenge of finding legitimate pool space made starting a High School program impossible. Then, in the Fall of 2015, the Severna Park Community Center (SPY Aquatic) indicated that they had some pool time available for the Key School. We jumped at the opportunity, and began the process of interviewing coaches and officially starting our program. A year later, our coaching staff, Mollie Walsh and Courtney Gaddi, has helped create a team that is enthusiastic, committed and extremely competitive. This is extraordinary in any program’s first year.
Recently, the Varsity Boys’ Swim Team swept a tri-meet against perennial powerhouse John Carroll and local rival Annapolis Area Christian School. The boys’ team, though still small in numbers, is already competitive with every team in the League. On the girls’ side, the success has been even more dramatic. At the time of this writing, the Key School Varsity Girls’ Swim Team was 5-0 in the IAAM― dominating each of their first five opponents―and poised to compete for an IAAM Championship. The team is comprised of a good combination of established club swimmers and relative newcomers to the sport, which has helped create a competitive tone from the outset. Coaches Walsh and Gaddi have created an atmosphere in which every member of the team is valued for their contribution and the positive camaraderie among the team members makes every practice and meet fun for all. While this is only the first year for the team, the program is already seeing great success and appears poised to be a staple of the Key School athletic program for years to come.
