Overview

The warm and welcoming Manse Library serves the Pre-School and the Lower School. A vibrant library program teaches students to become both effective researchers and discriminating readers. An 8000-plus-volume collection includes books and materials that enchant and inform three- through ten-year-olds.

  • Educators from Across the Nation Visit Key

    Key School was selected by AIMS librarians as one of three showcase schools for this year’s Association of Independent School Librarians (AISL) meeting, held in Baltimore last week. More than 130 independent school librarians from across the nation were on campus participating in workshops led by Key faculty and designed to highlight aspects of Key’s program.

  • Black-Eyed Susan Book Award Program

    It is almost Black-Eyed Susan book award time! Each year Maryland students have the opportunity to honor a special book chosen from a list developed by librarians around the state. After hearing the majority of the nominated picture books, the students vote for their favorite. The votes are tallied from participating schools and a statewide winner is announced. Key students love this “students’ choice” award!

  • The Mindful Library: A First Grade Experience

    Pass the Manse Library when first graders are inside and you will likely see their shoes lined up in a row outside the picture book room. Inside, six and seven year olds are practicing mindfulness with their librarian, Angela Baccala. “Teaching meditation began as a pilot program with first graders five or six years ago. We were introducing a Black-Eyed Susan book called Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth. Since zen is such an abstract concept for young children to grasp, we decided to share a few meditation techniques with the students. We immediately noticed its calming effects and Mary Jane Milner, the Lower School Head at the time, encouraged continuation of the pilot.”

  • Community Supports Key's Libraries

    Many Key families enjoyed the Key School evening at Barnes and Noble in early November as we celebrated our community of readers and raised funds for Key's three libraries. Thanks to all who participated in this annual event, both in person and online. The melodious flute performance by teachers Susan Flynn, Tatiana Klein and Jen Tonkin was the perfect accompaniment to book browsing.

  • Calling All Educators: Key Offers Summer Teaching Institute

    Please help us spread the word: Key School is offering a professional development institute for educators on June 15, 2012.

    Engaging Minds, Inspiring Ideas is open to all educators, including independent, public and private school teachers. Seminars include iPads in the Pre and Primary Classroom, The Collaborative Power of Google Docs, SMART Board 101 for Pre, Primary and Middle Schools, and Making the Most of Your SMART Board for Math (grades 3-7), Library Programs (Pre-School – grade 4), and Humanities: The Writing Process (grades 4-8).

    All sessions will be taught by members of Key’s faculty. More information is available on Key’s website.
