Who We Are: The Key School Robotics Club was founded in 2011 in Annapolis, Maryland. Since its inception, Key School Robotics Club has developed a highly motivated and competitive team that will compete in FIRST® Lego League challenges.    

The Key School Robotics Club supports the goals of the organization FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a not-for-profit charity founded to inspire childrens' interests in science, technology and engineering. The organization's mission is to encourage students to design accessible, innovative programs that build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology and engineering.

Club Goals

  • Design, build and program autonomous robots

  • Key Robotics Teams Earn Recognition at 2012 FIRST® LEGO® League Qualifier Event

    Key’s Robotics Club brought home honors from the December 8 2012 FIRST Lego League Qualifier Event. The first-year team won the Rookie of the Year Award and the “veteran” team earned 3rd place in both Project Presentation and the Robot Game.

  • Key Robotics Club Participates in FIRST® LEGO® League Competition Service Event

    Each year, the FIRST® LEGO® League competition organizers ask competing teams to participate in a service project that relates to the theme. This year, to correspond with the Senior Solutions Challenge, the Key Robotics Club is collecting items for senior citizens. Items of great need include: gift cards to Walmart, Target, and grocery stores, soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, and lip balm. Additional items of interest are: cough drops, teas and hot chocolates, dish soap, stamps, greeting cards, puzzle books, vitamins, and Ensure.

  • Key Robotics Teams Prepare for 2012 FIRST® LEGO® League Qualifier Event

    On December 8, Key’s two Middle School Robotics Teams will travel to South River High School for the qualifying round of the 2012-2013 FIRST® LEGO® League challenge. This year’s multi-school competition, the Senior Solutions Challenge, requires teams to research aging and consider how a healthy and productive lifestyle can be maintained. Students are then charged with isolating a single need they feel crucial for senior citizens and developing an innovative solution to enhance the seniors’ experience.

  • Key Robotics Teams Present Senior Solutions Challenge Projects at BayWoods

    Members of Key’s Robotics Club have returned from their second trip to BayWoods Senior Center. The trip, designed to gain feedback on the Senior Solutions Challenge projects, was constructive for the two Key Robotics Teams as they discussed their concepts with the BayWoods residents. The students received valuable input from the residents and will now make necessary adjustments to strengthen their concepts before the FIRST® LEGO® League Qualifier on December 8, 2012.

    After a preliminary research trip to BayWoods Senior Center, members of Key School’s Middle School Robotics Club were able to put the knowledge acquired during their interviews with the residents to use as they prepared to meet the 2012-2013 FIRST® LEGO® League challenge. The students, tasked this year with isolating a single need and developing a solution that enables senior citizens to enhance their mobility, remain connected to their communities, or provide a means to stay healthy and fit, compiled the information from their trip and have decided on two solutions.

  • Key Robotics Visits BayWoods Senior Center

    Members of Key School’s Middle School Robotics club took a trip to Baywoods Senior Center in early September to prepare for their 2012 FIRST® LEGO® League challenge. This year’s multi-school competition, the Senior Solutions Challenge, requires teams to research aging and examine how a healthy and productive lifestyle can be maintained. The outing proved to be an excellent learning experience for Key students, who were able to talk with senior citizens in order to further understand their needs. With the information acquired from their trip to BayWoods, Robotics Club members felt better equipped to take on the Senior Solutions Challenge, where they are tasked with isolating a single need and developing a solution that enables senior citizens to enhance their mobility, remain connected to their communities, or provide a means to stay healthy and fit. Members of the Robotics Club are now eagerly cultivating their ideas, which they will continue to develop and ultimately present at Baywoods in mid-November to gather feedback and determine which ideas resonate most with the residents.

During the process, club members will talk to and work with senior citizens to better understand the needs of this growing segment of our population. Students will then be tasked with isolating a single need and developing a solution that enables senior citizens to enhance their mobility, remain connected to their communities, or provide a means to stay healthy and fit.
