The Barn Renovation

Bold Plans for the Barn

The five million dollar Barn Renovation was completed in September 2009. This comprehensive project included the rehabilitation of both the interior and exterior of the main Barn, as well as construction of a complementary space that adjoined the existing building and replaced the deck classrooms. Overseeing this project was the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees, led by Steve Rabbitt, with Leo Wilson as the principal architect. The bold plans were inclusive of environmentally sensitive materials and practices, and, ultimately, increased the overall square footage of this venerated building from 18,000 to 28,000 square feet.

Highlights of the renovation include a commons area on the main level that provides a convivial space for students and teachers, and a generously apportioned Ford K. Brown Library on the second level with an adjoining media center. With twenty classroom spaces, the renovated Barn includes science and computer labs along with an Upper School music classroom and music practice rooms.
