Recently an article in the education section of The Washington Post caught my eye, "More 'Progress,' Less Play-Doh." The author, Valerie Strauss, grappled with the definition of "academic" and "rigorous" as it relates to Kindergarten classrooms across our nation and the test-taking regimens that are becoming more commonplace. She cited statistics that caused me to pause: "In 258 full day kindergarten classes in New York and Los Angeles teachers are instructing or testing children two to three hours each day and children play 30 minutes or less."

Key to Add Second Section of Pre-K 3 in 2010-2011
We are pleased to announce that, in response to the high demand for Key’s Pre-School program, the School will open a second section of the three-year-old class (Pre-K 3) in September 2010! With the completion of the Barn Renovation and the resulting relocation of the Middle School science lab, the Pre-School will have ample space to house this additional class. Help us spread the word – your friends should know that we will not have to waitlist so many of the precious three-year-olds that come our way!

New SMART Board Technology
To paraphrase an old television commercial, "It's not your father's...blackboard." In many of Key School's classrooms, today's blackboards are bright, interactive, computer-driven, and touch-sensitive. Chalk and chalk dust are things of the past. It is now all about digital ink.

Chapin Living Waters
For the last fourteen years, Chapin Living Waters has been helping people in third world countries grow vegetables in drought conditions. They offer simple, sustainable technologies for subsistence farming. Key School’s sixth graders and Kindergarteners employ Chapin’s bucket system to irrigate the School’s gardens and their efforts were featured in Chapin Living Waters’ April Newsletter.
