The Personal Essay
1:00-3:00 p.m.
Diana Toebbe
The personal essay is that genre that asks the writer to be personally reflective, to reveal something of himself or herself that would not otherwise be revealed on a college application. Students consider the following questions: Who is my audience? How can I make my essay stand out? What characteristics do I have that make me unique? The course helps shape the student’s experiences and observations into a powerful written expression. With guidance from the teacher, each student chooses compelling and appropriate topics about which to write. Using practice questions from actual college applications, each student is expected to complete at least one personal essay during the course. By the end of the course, each student is equipped to undertake personal essays more independently and successfully. Special emphasis is placed on developing an engaging opening and a memorable conclusion.
