Design Engineering Challenge
- Lower School
Key's 3rd graders and their parent helpers, with the added help of Mr. Nespole, spent the morning as structural engineers. Given index cards and masking tape, they were tasked with building a tower at least a foot tall that could support two or more cans of food for one full minute. Trial and error along with continual checking on the strength of the index card tower's base led to success. But the young engineers were not to rest on their laurels. Their next mission is to take their supplies home and improve on their tower by using fewer index cards, going higher with their build, and/or supporting more weight. Needless to say they recorded all their calculations and iterations and, in true engineering fashion, gave written recommendations to future builders on what to do to make their towers tall and strong.
