3rd Grade Engineers Build Stomp Rockets
After reading Garvey’s Choice by Nikki Grimes in Language Arts, third graders celebrated the main character Garvey’s love of astronomy and science by building and testing stomp rockets. This interdisciplinary project connected language arts and science and tasked students with taking on the role of astronomical engineers and building their own stomp launcher using PVC pipe, tubing and a two-liter bottle. The engineers conducted their tests on a beautiful, brisk day on the Manse Field, with the farthest launch reaching 62 feet.
They took the further step of emulating engineers by building iterative paper rocket models in Maker Tech. Finally, the students reflected on the process and offered theories as to why they thought one version might have worked better than another.
