5th Graders Use Stop-Motion Videos to Enhance Understanding of Multi-Digit Decimal Multiplication
  • Middle School

In an effort to demonstrate their mastery of multi-digit decimal multiplication, our 5th graders have created stop-motion videos depicting word problems that they crafted themselves. Students were asked to create a word problem, solve it and use a stop-motion animated video to "act it out." The only requirements were to use at least two-digit numbers in their multiplication problem and to explain the process of decimal multiplication somewhere in their video. As seen in the video below by Emma Cunningham and Nathan Fish, the goal was for students to be able to explain the process of multiplication as if they were teaching someone how to multiply decimals for the very first time.

Math teacher Kate Junkins said that the students were encouraged to be creative with their storyboards and noted that "the students were so enthusiastic and engaged, they loved being creative and involved in their word problems."
