6th Grade Virtual Field Trip to Baltimore Museum of Industry

  • Middle School

In lieu of an in-person field trip our 6th graders recently had the opportunity to visit the Baltimore Museum of Industry for a virtual field trip.

The live, guided tour took students through the entire museum and included discussions around the themes of immigration, changing technology, skilled and unskilled work, and segregated labor with a deep dive into the canning, printing, oystering, and garment industries. Students learned about jobs and work that are important to Baltimore’s history as an industrial city while museum educators demonstrated the museum’s working machines.

After learning about the canning industry in Baltimore, students used the materials provided by the museum in advance to design and create their own cans. Their creative renditions ranged from canned oysters to canned fruits and vegetables., which they each shared with their classmates and the docent during the visit.
