  • Middle School

Key 5th grader, Aurelia Mapp has been named as one of only 26 awardees as part of the 2019 World Artists' Experiences (WAE) Writing Project. Her poem "Build the Community" was selected for publication in the 2019 edition of their World Artists Experiences Anthology. WAE is a non-profit organization that builds bridges for international understanding through cultural diplomacy in communities, colleges and schools. The Writing Project offers Maryland students in grades 3-12 the opportunity to reflect on and write about living in a shared global community. This year's topic was Breaking Barriers, Building Community — Connecting, Cooperating, Caring. A panel of writers, headed by former Maryland Poet Laureate Michael S. Glaser and Professor Rachel Smith selected the works to be published in the anthology. Awardees are honored at a ceremony at the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center of the Embassy of Oman in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations Aurelia!

Build the Community
by Aurelia Mapp

Build the community
Make it rise
Make it have beauty
Make litter extinct
Make our community distinct
If it happens to fall,
Don’t give up hope
We’ll build it up again
And won’t let anyone say nope
