Innovation & Engineering

Where Ideas Take Shape

Key School’s Innovation & Engineering Program is a continuous, project-based pathway that begins in the earliest years and culminates in advanced engineering electives in Upper School. From Kindergarten through Grade 12, students engage in a spiraling curriculum that introduces increasingly sophisticated tools, technologies, and ways of thinking while nurturing creativity and curiosity.

The program is grounded in the Design Thinking model, a human-centered process that teaches students to empathize, prototype, test, and refine their ideas. Whether a Kindergartener is building a playground from cardboard or a senior is designing an autonomous robot, students learn that innovation develops through experimentation, iteration, and collaboration.

Our program aligns with nationally recognized standards, including NGSS, ITEEA, and CSTA, ensuring that students build strong foundations in science, engineering, and computer science while exploring innovation creatively.

Engineering intersects with environmental science, computer science, ethics, art, and humanities.

Early, Embedded Coding

Students learn coding as a language for creation, beginning with simple sequences and culminating in fully autonomous systems and AI-driven projects.

Real Tools, Real Technologies

3D printers, CAD software, microcontrollers, robotics tools, sensors, coding platforms, and fabrication materials become familiar, age-appropriate tools—not novelties.

Authentic Assessment

Across grade levels, students demonstrate learning through prototypes, engineering notebooks, coding challenges, design reviews, and polished final projects that showcase both process and product.
