Morning Exercise Program
Each grade in our Lower School has a once-a-week, 20 minute “Spark Block,” kick-starting the day with joy, laughter, learning and fun!
Spark Block is in addition to their regularly scheduled Physical Education classes and is designed to promote a healthy relationship with active movement, support and grow students' gross motor skills, movement knowledge, and body awareness, and emphasize social, collaborative, and personal skills.
Students actively participate in age-appropriate collaborative games and activities that promote physical fitness, cardiovascular exercise, and executive functioning. The activities require communication, participation, and effort.
Students that engage in physical fitness at an early age in a supportive environment will enjoy and seek out physical activity, maintain physical fitness as they age, and learn the appropriate social skills associated with teamwork, sportsmanship, and cooperative behavior.
The foundation of the Lower School Spark Block program is a work titled Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain by Dr. John J. Ratey of Harvard University Medical School. Spark touts the benefits of cardio-aerobic exercise on executive functioning, planning, organization, and memory―with a strong correlation to improved test scores.
