Growing Student Leaders
Across all Divisions, leadership is a skill that is taught, practiced, and strengthened over time. Beginning with early opportunities to represent the school and growing into formal coursework, student governance, and peer leadership, students learn to lead with confidence, responsibility, and purpose. With a wide range of clubs and activities across Middle and Upper School, every student can find meaningful ways to explore their interests, contribute, and lead.

Leadership Across Divisions
Lower School
Leadership begins with belonging and responsibility. Starting in fourth grade, students can serve as Student Ambassadors, representing the interests of the Division and helping build a welcoming community. Through daily classroom interactions, collaboration, and age-appropriate roles, students begin developing the habits that strong leadership requires.
Middle School
In Middle School, students take on greater ownership and voice. Forum (student government) gives students an active role in shaping student life and practicing leadership through service, collaboration, and communication. Students also continue to grow as leaders through classroom experiences that emphasize community, responsibility, and character, and interscholastic athletics.
Upper School
Upper School offers Key’s most robust leadership development, combining meaningful roles with intentional learning. Students can engage in leadership-focused coursework, including Community Service and Leadership Theory and Practice, where they explore what effective leadership looks like and how it is applied in real contexts. Forum, Key’s student government, also plays a meaningful role in shaping the student experience, giving students a voice in school life and opportunities to lead through service, collaboration, and communication.
A dedicated Student Leadership Coordinator helps support student leadership initiatives, amplify student voice, and strengthen leadership experiences across campus.
Clubs & Activities
Student life at Key is active, varied, and student-driven. Middle and Upper School students can choose from more than 60 clubs and activities, offering ample opportunities to explore interests, build skills, and step into leadership roles. Whether students are launching a new idea, leading an established group, or joining something for the first time, Key encourages participation that grows into ownership and impact.

Leadership also grows through experience. Key’s Outdoor Education Program includes a peer leader program, where students help guide, support, and model leadership during outdoor experiences for younger students. These opportunities build confidence, teamwork, and responsibility in authentic settings.
Admission Student Ambassadors
Key students also help tell the Key story. Through the Admission Key Ambassador program, students represent the school to prospective families and visitors, developing communication skills, professionalism, and pride in their community.
